An insight into the life of an English graduate:

An insight into the life of an English graduate:

I gained a 2:1 last summer in English and Writing,

I had high hopes and high energy in my job searches,

I went on Universal credit,

I came off of Universal credit

I worked as a Barista,

I quit the Barista role within a month,

I’m on Universal Credit again,

I got rejected from Halfords,

Next,

TeachFirst,

I’ve not even had a reply from one of the 300 teaching assistant roles I’ve applied for,

I’ve been told I only look 16 years old but I’m actually 24,

last week I was harassed by chavs in my local park who went down dog bins and tried to get me with poo! In retaliation I threw my spare ribs at them, and ruined one boys tracksuit jacket,

Yes I was eating spare ribs in the park!

The group of boys re-emerged as I walked home with faeces in hand, one left with faeces in his mouth,

I then doubted my aspirations to teach,

I remembered that children won’t have access to dog poo in a classroom,

With this assurance I began yet another teaching assistant application.

Taking a stanza

I am choosing to take a stand through the art form of poetry,

I am a recent English Graduate, I am on Universal Credit.

I have applied for job after job with no response

I have a lack of  experience, a lack of money and an unprofessional portfolio of work.

Why did I go to University?

To learn how to make shit hot Haiku’s and become depressed by Virginia Woolf?

I studied the Middle Ages,

Gender studies, creative writing,

I achieved a 2:1 , am  jobless and still job-hunting.

Follow me on my pursuit of purpose and publication- I will be posting updates of my journey to hopefully publication; through submissions of creative work to magazines and online journals. I will  be posting clear lists of organisations/publications and sites that are currently open for submissions, any observations or tips would be greatly appreciated, please leave website/blog links in my comments and i’ll be sure to have a read.
